SHE-CAN – Supporting Her Education Changes a Nation

SHE-CAN is the hub of a powerful network of stakeholders who are working together to accelerate change by shifting how global solutions are forged. SHE-CAN and its mentors, donors, and partner colleges and organizations are committed to mobilizing women’s voices and talents. We believe that women must sit at every table: in the peace and climate negotiations, in the corporate boardroom, in the President’s office. But we also know this vision can’t be realized unless women are prepared and qualified to step up and succeed in leadership roles.

This vision informs our mission: to equip and empower young women from post-conflict countries to become leaders who change their nations. To do this we identify talented potential leaders with limited resources in countries emerging from conflict, including Liberia, Rwanda and Cambodia. We prepare every scholar for SAT and language tests and pair her with a mentor team of five U.S. professionals who help her apply to a partner college that guarantees us tuition/room/board scholarships. Once the scholar begins her academic journey in the U.S., SHE-CAN covers her non-scholarship costs and her mentor team supports her emotionally and academically. The SHE-CAN network also enhances each scholar’s leadership capacity through leadership trainings and access to summer internships, conferences, networking opportunities and career opportunities back home. After graduation, our scholars return home as change-agents, armed with the skills, credentials, and networks to grow into empowered leaders.

We’re committed to expanding our program to a “nation-changing” level. As SHE-CAN scales, our graduates will become a growing, collaborative support system that can lift up each other and challenge centuries old gender barriers together. These up-and-coming leaders will move forward to shape laws, negotiate peace, improve how governments and businesses are run, and transform how society will address the most pressing issues of our time.

Since SHE-CAN was founded in 2011, we’ve had significant impact:

  • 56 low-income women have won full-ride scholarships
  • 19 graduates are emerging leaders
  • 280 professionals are mentors supporting our scholars with love and guidance
  • $18M in scholarship funds have been awarded
  • 39 organizations hosted interns including Boeing, WorldBridge Group, and Zipline
  • 25 U.S. colleges, including Dartmouth and Wellesley, are enriched by our scholars
  • 12 colleges have committed, in advance, to fund full-ride scholarship
